As Captain Joshua Slocum began his voyage aboard his thirty-seven-foot Spray, he had just had his fifty-first birthday. He could look back on two decades of being the master of some of the finest merchant sailing ships, an extremely happy fife with his wife, Virginia, who sailed with him and bore him four children, and a fife filled with exotic ports and high adventure.

But now middle-aged, his world had crumbled about him. His wife had died suddenly, a second wife was little more than a babysitter for his children, and he was facing the end of the era of sail and the coming of steam—a change to which he could not adapt.

He had nothing when he was given Spray, a century-old oyster-fishing sloop, as a joke. But, though it had lam for years on the beach, he set about rebuilding it quixotically and, a year and $553.62 later, he had created a tiny yacht.

With $1.80 in cash and agreements with several newspapers to file stories en route, he set sail with no itinerary or schedule.Thirty-eight months and 46,000 miles later, he sailed into Newport, Rhode Island, and immortality. Sailing Alone Around The World, first issued in 1900, became an instant success.

In 1909 at the age of sixty-five, he set off on an expedition to explore the Orinoco and Amazon rivers. He was never seen nor heard from again.
